Pathology - Dilated Optic Nerve Sheath and Ruptured Globe
- An increase in intracranial pressure is transmitted directly to the optic nerve, which causes dilation.
- To evaluate for elevated intracranial pressure, obtain a longitudinal cross sectional view.
- The standard location for measurement is 3 mm posterior to retina.
- A measurement greater than 5 mm signifies elevated intracranial pressure.
- Papilledema can also be seen with bulging of the optic nerve in the retina
